Whether you are a “blues” music aficionado or you simply enjoy listening to live music, here are a few suggestions for some of the many live musical acts and the venues where you can find these local Central Coast gems.
There are many really good blues bands on the Central Coast, such as Code Blues, Big Daddy’s Blues Band, The Cinders, Lenny Blue and the Otter Guys, to name a few. These local bands include some fantastic musicians of the caliber you might expect to hear in the bigger cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Central Coast is privileged to have so much local talent such as the incredible harmonica playing of Rick Munoz of Code Blues, as well as some of the hottest guitar players, like Guy Budd of Guy Budd and the Gypsy Souls. It’s very exciting to have these talented musicians living right here amongst us! With plenty of original licks, as well as the old blues standards, you’ll be sure to get your “blues fix.”
Now that you have the musicians’ names and your feet have begun tapping, where do you go to listen and dance to these bands? There are several local clubs and restaurants that support the local music scene. We have Otter Rock Café in Morro Bay, The Clubhouse in San Luis Obispo, which hosts a weekly blues jam session on Wednesday nights. In the North county, there is The Pourhouse in Paso Robles, and further up the North Coast in Cambria you'll find the Cambria Pines Lodge. All of these establishments provide entertainment with no cover charge and most have full menus for your dining enjoyment.
Here on the Central Coast, you’ll be able to hear both local blues musical acts, as well as world famous blues artists at the San Luis Obispo Blues Society. The second longest continuous running blues society in the United States, they hold dance concerts from September through May at the Vet’s Hall in San Luis Obispo. Tickets are reasonably priced at $20.00 for the general public, and $17.00 for members of the society.
A wonderful yearly event, the Avila Beach Blues Festival is held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend at the Avila Beach Golf Resort, in warm, sunny and beautiful Avila Beach. This outdoor concert features three separate blues acts from all over the United States. Previous years acts have included Susan Tedeschi, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tommy Castro, Johnny Lang, and Los Lobos. The concert stage is set up right on the golf course green and you are allowed to bring blankets and low back chairs for the general admission area, or sit in chairs directly in front of the stage in the 'Golden Circle." A clam shell's throw from the water, this festival is a daylong "beach party." Tickets vary in price from year to year, but are always reasonable considering the quality of acts that come right here to San Luis Obispo.
Be sure to check out these great venues and impressive variety of talented bands on the Central Coast for a guaranteed entertaining time!
